This nurse is a member of the former Russian Red Cross and many of her number have given splendid cooperation to the work of the American Red Cross in the Baltic states where there is still great need of medicines and food owing to the influx of refugees from other parts of Russia

Fighting typhus in Russia. One of the greatest battles against disease over carried on by the American Red Cross has been that against the typhus scourge of West Russia. People were dying by hundreds without hospital care or even medicine when the Americans arrived. Now hundreds of hospitals throughoutthe country are caring for soldiers and civilians sick with the dread disease. Practically all of the hospitals are dependent upon the Red Cross for their hospital and medical supplies. The Interallied Medical Commission sent by the League of Red Cross Societies to investigate the typhus situation in Poland found that practically the entire peasant population is infested with lice, and as typhus infection is constantly being introduced from the East by prisoners of War and refugees, a very severe epidemic will occur this winter unless the necessary equipment and supplies are received to enable the medical authorities to deal energetically with the situation

Barbers mean nothing in life. A horny handed son of the Balkan soil. He has lived the allotted three score and ten and then some. And despite the vicissitudes that have swept Roumania he still believes in the future of his country and the goodness of his God. He was a patient in the American Red Cross Hospital but refused to remain if his hair was cut. It is a fifty year growth and he wouldn't part with it
