Summary
Significance: Edward Drinker Cope (1840-1897) was an extremely important 19th century natural scientist whose work helped to create specialization and professionalism of American science. He held teaching posts at Haverford and Penn, did zoological studies at the Smithsonian and published aproximately 1,300 works. The houses are a typical example of 1870s Philadelphia townhouses located in a once fashionable area near the Center City.
