Summary
Significance: The overhead crank steam engine and associated cane crusher now displayed at the Estate Whim Museum were manufactured by P. & W. McOnie, Glasgow, Scotland in 1847. Originally installed at Estate Mount Stewart, the apparatus remained in service until the 1860s when a horizontal steam engine and crusher from Estate Spring Garden replaced it. The mill was disassembled and stored at the factory, and was subsequently buried when the factory collapsed. In 1975, several representatives from the St. Croix Landmarks Society, planning to remove the horizontal engine from Mount Stewart, discovered the buried pieces of the overhead crank mill...
