Guarding a stronghold. Supplies of any kind have to be closely guarded in the Crimea where thousands of refugees without homes, food or clothing are crowding daily. All the supplies of the small district have been exhausted and new supplies arriving by boat would be stolen immediately without heavy guards. This picture shows troops of the Volunteer Army guarding the warehouse of the American Red Cross where hospital and medical supplies are stolen. The presence of these guards is all that keeps the population from rifling the warehouse and appropriating the hospital supplies for their own use
