Harrington-Smith Block, 18-52 Hanover Street, Manchester, Hillsborough County, NH
Significance: Completed in 1881 from designs by John T. Fanning. It was built in the historic downtown core of Manchester to combine commercial/retail street floor space with offices in the upper floors and two ells and a grand opera house joined to the north side of the main block. The opera house portion of the block, owned separately since the time of construction, was totally destroyed by fires in March, 1985 along with the west ell. The building is significant as one of only three known extant buildings designed by architect and nationally distinguished hydraulic engineer, John T. Fanning.
