Hearthside, Great Road, Saylesville, Kent County, RI
Summary
Significance: Hearthside was constructed by Stephen H. Smith, owner of the Butterfly Mill and a Blackstone Canal commissioner. It is a vernacular expression of Federal-period design with a two-story portico, square columns, ogee gables, and a curving dormer. Fenestration in the dormer evokes the three-part Palladian window form using a wheel (round) window over a door as the central component. The interior is noted for its wainscoting, marble fireplaces, and spiral stair.
