Summary

Measuring only about 3 x 5 inches, this small memento of President Garfield's inaugural ball is one of three among the papers of William Evarts who, in 1881, was a delegate to the International Monetary Conference in Paris. Previously, he had been the attorney general and was the chief counsel to President Andrew Johnson during Johnson's impeachment trial in 1868. Later, he served as the secretary of state under President Hayes and, from 1885 to 1891, he served in the U.S. Senate as a Republican senator from New York.
