Lawrence Machine Shop, Building No. 8, 70 General Street, Lawrence, Essex County, MA
Summary
Significance: This building was part of the Lawrence Machine Shop yard owned by the city's founding corporation, Essex Company. It was constructed in 1849, one year after the Lawrence Machine Shop was built. In 1857 it was bought by Everett Mills which was the world's largest cotton mill. Everett Mills figured prominently in Lawrence's 1912 Bread & Roses Labor Strike.
