Lehigh Canal, Hokendauqua Dam, Lehigh River 300 feet north of Hokendauqua-North Catasauqua Bridge, North Catasauqua, Northampton County, PA
Summary
Significance: 416 foot stone and timber crib dam with an effective height of 6.9 feet, impounding a slackwater pool 2000 yards upstream to the outlet lock of Section Five. Originally built in 1829, the dam has been several times rebuilt and under constant maintenance until the closing of the canal. The dam was breached in two places about 1977 and has not been repaired. The feeder gates and stonework are apparently still in good condition and could be reactivated to water Section Six. Immediately upstream on the west bank were the extensive works of the Thomas Iron Company.
