description

Summary

Significance: The Richards House, Locust Grove, is one of the most outstanding examples of domestic architecture in the late Georgian style in Northwest Fork Hundred and Sussex County, Delaware. The 3-bay Flemish-bonded brick section of the house represents a building type which was once common in Delaware. Its interior features woodwork of fir and pine skillfully carved and painted and a 2nd floor fireplace which has no 1st floor foundation. Historically, the Richardses have contributed much to Delaware's quality of life since their settlement in northwest Sussex County, Northwest Fork Hundred, in the late 17th century. Mary Richards Loockerman, who presently owns Locust Grove, is the 5th generation of the family to live there. Together with the Richards houses at Middle Space and Poplar Level, both within a half mile of Locust Grove, an important group of 18th, 19th and 20th century structures is represented.
