Summary
Significance: Scott Field (now Scott Air Force Base) was established in 1917 by the Army in support of the Army Airship program and is nationally significant in military history for lighter-than-air training. After 1937, the base became an Army Air Corps communications training center. Thousands of radio operate mechanics graduated from Scott's training centers and it was known as the "Communications University of the Army Air Forces." At this writing, a much expanded Scott AFB is host to three major commands: Air Mobility Command, Air Force Communications Command, and U.S. Transportation Command...General Officer Quarters #229 is a contributing resource within the "Colonial Housing" section of the historic district. This distinctive area retains most of its original character and design integrity. Built as a variation from Army Family Housing Standardized Plan NCO-9, General Officer Quarters #229 is one of three nearly-identical housing units facing the Main Base Parade Field.
