Summary

The statue was unveiled by the Sons of the Revolution in 1893. Hale was hanged by Loyalist partisans during the American Revolution. Before the trap door opened, he proclaimed, "My only regret is that I have but one life to give for my country." The statue was created by Frederick William MacMonnies, a pupil of August St. Gaudens.
