The Venetian Blues. The people of Venice, who boast of being different from all others in Italy, have a word all of their own for "the homesick blues." It is inspired by the great tower of St. Marks, or Campanile, which makes the Venice skyline scarcely less well known that that of New York. They call it "campanilissima" but it means just plain "blues." The word combines all the longing of a Venetian away from his beloved city, for the shadow of the great tower, the busy Piazza of St. Mark's and the quiet of the sheltered canals where gondolas glide in the twilight. If an American asks for a definition of "Campanilissima," he will soon realize that it means more than homesickness, blues and ennui all put together
