description

Summary

Twelve-panel comic strip shows Buster Brown, his friend Mary Jane, and his dog Tige visiting in Hogan's Alley being introduced by the Yellow Kid to his friends. They meet the Kid's girl friend Liz, who gives Buster a big kiss, Slippy Dempsey, who falls off the house every day, and Mrs. Moiphy, who mends the Kid's clothes. Finally they meet the Kid's pet goat, Plato, who kicks Tige in the head and butts Buster. Buster falls out of his bed and wakes up, discovering that it has all been a dream. The strip concludes with Outcault's trademark tongue in cheek moral, resolving that "Dreaming is a bad habit." Outcault drew The Yellow Kid (generally considered to be the first real comic strip) from 1895 to 1898 and Buster Brown from 1902 to 1920. This strip is the first of four strips in which the Yellow Kid is featured in a Buster Brown strip. The Kid refers to Buster as "another fellow who is being imitated like I was," referring to the fact that at the time, a rival version of the comic strip was being published in another newspaper.
Title taken from the heading of the strip when it was published. Because Outcault had switched newspapers, he was unable to use the name Buster Brown in the title, replacing it with a picture of the boy.
Strip is colored only enough to provide direction to the colorist at the newspaper.
