Today he is employed by a New England company, whose normal peacetime product is cube steak machinery. The drill press he operates was a valuable part of the company's peacetime equipment, is even more valuable today in the speeding of work on war subcontracts. Along with other workers in this Eastern plant, they have turned their skill to the vital needs of the day, and in many cases have seen to it that the machinery they used to use does Uncle Sam's most important work today. Auto conversion to airplane engines. With normal operations of this automobile factory suspended for the duration, the gigantic task of converting the entire plant (floor space: 500' x 900') to war production was taken over by the National Defense Plant Corporation. This involved all degrees of remodelling, the removal of old and installation of new machinery, and extensive rebuilding of the plant itself. This hand milling machine, formerly used in manufacture of automobile motors, has been converted to production of airplane engines. In peacetime it was used to mill the pulley keyway on the front of crankshafts. It cost $150 to convert this $1,800 machine with installation of a special fixture to enable milling of staking nicks at each end of crankpin oil hobs. Chevrolet, Buffalo, New York

De Land pool. Babcock airplane plant. Interior of the Babcock plant at De Land, Florida. When the Japanese struck Pearl Harbor, this was a dormant airplane plant. It was revived as a community project. Businessmen of De Land pooled their machines and resources, used this plant as a prime contractor to obtain war work, and now are producing over two-million dollars worth of war equipment in it. These motor repair racks, being turned out on a production schedule engineers termed "impossible" two months ago, are being built by former clerks, auto-mechanics and small shop operators who were caught by the impact of the war on their peacetime businesses
