Charlestown Navy Yard, Central Power Plant, Attached to northeast end of Building 107 at intersection of Third Avenue & Ninth Street, Boston, Suffolk County, MA

description

Summary

The Boston Redevelopment Authority hired William A. Owens to document all buildings in the Charlestown Navy Yard in 1977, most of which were exterior photographs.

Significance: Building 108 was originally built to supply electric power for Building 107, which housed the Yards and Docks Department (later the Public Works Department), but was almost immediately expanded as part of a congressionally-mandated effort to consolidate personnel and facilities. By 1908, the Central Power Plant had replaced a number of smaller power plants throughout the shipyard, and contained enough generating capacity to proved nearly all the electric power needed at the yard. The Central Power Plant supplied electric power for the shipyard until 1974, when the yard was decommissioned.
