Summary
Significance: A rare and well documented 1858 building that served the City of Mobile concurrently both as a public market and city governmental building until well into the 20th century. Since the removal of the market, the whole building has been occupied by municipal offices and court room, until the devastating Hurricane Frederick in 1979. The building is significant for its architectural characteristics as well as for its historic importance to the City. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark, as well as being part of the Church Street East Historic District.
