Production. Tin smelting. Emptying bags of raw tin ore from South America on a conveyor which feeds the crusher of a Southern smelter. The crusher reduces the larger particles to uniform size and discharges ore ready for the first stages of the smelting operation. The plant is already producing large quantities of tin for the countless war needs of the United Nations. Additional processing units now being added assure a much heavier output in the near future

Albuquerque, New Mexico. Magnaflux inspector A.J. Fry at work on an engine wheel axle in the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad shop. The cable in his hand magnetizes the axle as he spreads steel dust over an area. He then cuts the current off and carefully blows the dust away. The steel particles remain, however in any tiny cracks and reveal any surface flaws that might exist. The axles of engine wheels are magnafluxed every 200,000 miles

Rubber reclamation. Scrap tires, with beads removed, are fed to the "cracker," or grinding machine, of a big Midwest tire plant. The machine breaks the scrap tire into small pieces to facilitate removal of rubber from fabric by the xylos process. Firestone

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. When "slabs" (brass or copper castings in the form of long flat cakes) are being passed rolls, the first step in making sheet metal. A series of passes back and forth through various rolls reduces the "slabs" to thickness desired. Chase Copper and Brass Company, Euclid, Ohio

Production. Veneer for aircraft and other war essentials. Sawmill carriage in a large Midwest veneer plant cuts flitches, or slabs, from an oak log that will be used in making veneer for essential war purposes. The sawyer at the right controls the speed of the carriage and the thickness of the cut. Louisville, Kentucky

Jack Delano (August 1, 1914 – August 12, 1997) was an American photographer, cinematographer, composer, and director. He is best known for his work with the Farm Security Administration (FSA) during the Great Depression, where he captured the struggles of rural Americans and their way of life in photographs that have become iconic images of the era. Delano was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and emigrated to the United States in 1923. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and later worked for the FSA and Office of War Information during World War II, where he documented the war effort and daily life on the home front. After the war, Delano continued to work as a photographer and filmmaker, composed music, and directed documentaries.
