All-American news--excerpts. 1942-1945

description

Summary

All-American news were the first newsreels produced for a black audience. Made in the 1940s and 1950s, they were originally intended to encourage black Americans to participate in, and support the war effort, and to reflect an African-American perspective on world and national events. Highlights of this issue include segments about Dean Dixon's American Youth Orchestra performing at Carnegie Hall, a cookbook published by Rebecca West, private cook for Mrs. Eleanor Patterson, owner of Washington D.C. Times-Herald, a meeting in Louisville, Kentucky of some of the leaders of the African Episcopal Methodist Church, including Rev. R.R. Wright, and Dr. E.A. Selby, and a dance performance by the students of Harlem dance instructor, Mary Bruce.
Possible dates are based on the dates of newsreel segments: Dean Dixon's students performed at Carnegie Hall on May 18, 1945; date taken from the New York times. According to the narration, Mary Bruce's students performed as the "Star Buds of 1944", Rebecca West's cookbook was published in 1942.
Appearing: Dean Dixon, Rebecca West, Rev. Richard R. Wright, Jr., Mary Bruce.
Incomplete: end title, some footage lacking.
Cannot confirm that newsreel stories are in the same order, or on the same reel as when originally released.
