Ammadelle, 637 North Lamar Boulevard, Oxford, Lafayette County, MS
Summary
Significance: Constructed between 1859 and 1861, this spacious red brick house with an irregular floor plan is a prime example of the architectural talents of Calvert Vaux (1824-1895), perhaps better known for his work in landscape design. Vaux's original drawings survive and show that the house remains little changed from his original conception. An intended wine cellar and balconies were never built, as the Civil War interrupted their installation. The picturesque curves defining lawns and plantings of the seven acres surrounding the house were also devised by Vaux. Ammadale represents the unique style that was characteristic of Vaux, both an architect and landscape architect. Vaux himself considered Ammadale as representative of his best work.
