Summary

Photograph shows a young woman, Hester Tyler as portrayed by Julia McCune, full-length, standing, with an elderly woman, the minister's wife, on the left, portrayed by Clarence H. White's mother, Phebe, who is pinning a flower in Hester's hair; standing on the right is an elderly man, the minister, portrayed by William T. Evans, he is standing, full-length, behind a chair with his hands resting on the back of the chair. The minister and his wife have come to perform the early morning marriage between Hester and Louis La Farge. This photograph is one of six taken by Clarence H. White to illustrate the story "Beneath the Wrinkle" by Clara Morris, and is one of three photographs that were used in the original publication in McClure's Magazine, New York & London : S.S. McClure, 1904, v. 22, Nov. 1903 - April 1904, pp. 429-434 (p. 432).

Clarence H. White (April 8, 1871 - July 8, 1925) was an American photographer and teacher. He was one of the leading figures of the American Photo-Secession movement, which sought to promote photography as fine art. White was a master of the photographic medium and is known for his soft-focus and romantic images of women and children and his experimental work with movement and multiple exposures. He was also a successful portrait photographer and took many photographs of artists and writers of the day. White taught photography at the New York School of Photography he co-founded. He died in Mexico City in 1925 on a photographic trip.

Clara Morris was an American stage actress who was active during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Productions: "East Lynne," "Camille," and "The Two Orphans." She also wrote several plays and essays about her experiences as an actress. Despite her success, Clara Morris struggled with alcoholism and financial difficulties throughout her life.
