Bleak, mountainous Attu had a population of only about forty people prior to the Japanese invasion. As yet there has been no word as to what happened to these people when the Japanese took over. This is a picture of Attu village situated on Chichagof harbour where much of the recent fighting took place. The tundra, with which the slopes of the hills are covered, may look easy to traverse, but its depth, two or three feet, makes walking difficult and tiring. In June or July, according to experts of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, these slopes will be covered with flowers of which more than 100 different varieties may be found there

Japanese-American volunteers. This is the Army, Shuichi "Pete" Sakamoto, surveyor and civil engineer, and Bill Shiramizu of Hanamaulu, are told by Captain C.J. White, commanding officer of the provisional company of AJA (Americans of Japanese ancestry) volunteers on Kauai, as they spend their first day in camp. Not yet sworn into the Army, the men has passed their preliminary physical and were waiting results of their X-ray and blood tests. They were among the first of Kauai's contingent of AJA volunteers to begin the last stage of the induction procedure

U.S. forces inflict heavy casualties on Japs in capture of Buna, New Guinea. A 37 mm. gun crew, part of a U.S. Army tank force in New Guinea, fires at an objective at Buna Mission. Empty shells, heaped hurriedly in the foreground, indicate intensity of fire. The action resulted in the complete rout of the foe with heavy losses as the American and Australian troops drove the Japanese from their last stronghold in Papua

Japanese-American volunteers. Among the men from local board No. 2 on Kauai, Hawaii who reported for physical examination prior to induction into the AJA [Americans of Japanese ancestry] combat unit taking shape in the territory were these three pairs of brothers. From left to right they are: Minoru, twenty-eight, and Chitsugi Manabe, twenty-three; Tooru, eighteen, and James S. Takenaka, twenty; and Shigeo, twenty-one, and Tadao Suemori, twenty. Tooru Takenaka was still a student in high school when he went up for his physical. He volunteered because "I want to go in with my brother to do my share."

Japanese-American volunteers. First of the territory's quota of 1,725 AJA (Americans of Japanese ancestry) volunteers to be inducted into the U.S. Army Combat Regiment now being formed, 18-year-old Mitsura Doi of Kauai, Hawaii, garage worker, receives congratulations from Major Charles V. McManus, adjutant of the Kauai Service Command who administered the oath of induction at 2:40 PM, Thursday, March 11. Doi was born at Koloa and volunteered with the blessing of his parents. "I'm just waiting to begin training and get into action," he said as he shook hands with Major McManus

Japanese-American volunteers. First pair of brothers among the AJA Americans of Japanese ancestry volunteers inducted into the U.S. Army in the territory were Chitsugi, twenty-three, and Minoru Manabe, twenty-eight, who took the oath of allegiance together among the first batch of fifty-eight Kauai registrants sworn in. Both were born at Anahola but lived in Kealia, Kauai with their elder sister Fumiyo Hashimoto who is shown bidding them goodbye. Both went to the Kapaa Grammar School and last worked for the Lihue Plantation Company. They volunteered separately without each other's knowledge immediately after formation of an AJA combat regiment was announced

Nyssa, Oregon. Japanese-Americans who were evacuated from a coastal area and who now live at the FSA (Farm Security Administration) camp attending a dance given by a local Japanese farmer. There are some Japanese-Americans who are permanent residents of this section of Oregon; they were not subject to evacuation orders. These permanent residents naturally have retained complete freedom, while the Japanese-Americans living at the FSA camp are under certain restrictions
