Corduroy road in Lithuania. German made road running fifty miles through thick forests in Lithuania, over which the American Red Cross carried its first relief supplies to the disease stricken cities of Vilna and Grodno. This corduroy road is built on sandy soil of pine saplings from the immense forests in this part of white Russia. The countryside resembles the sandy stretches of the Gulf Coast of the United States, and the soil will not produce staple foods like wheat, corn or potatoes. The inhabitants are in a very low state of vitality from lack of sustaining foods, which must come from the south
