description

Summary

Speeches made at time of Emancipation Day presentation of a souvenir book to John M. Ashley, including ones by William H. Young, president of the Afro-American League of Tennessee, and by A.M.E. Bishop Benjamin W. Arnett reviewing achievements of African Americans since Emancipation. Ashley was a prominent Republican congressman from Ohio and an outspoken abolitionist who introduced legislation in Congress to outlaw slavery in Washington, D.C. (1862), and in the U.S. (1863).
Title devised from content of Appendix.
"The address of Bishop Benjamin William Arnett, D.D., of Wilberforce, Ohio. At Chicago, Ill., September 22, 1893": p. vii-xxvii.
Also available in digital form on the Library of Congress Web site.
This separately published appendix differs in extent and in captions of plates from the unpaged appendix which appears at the end of James Mitchell Ashley's Duplicate copy of the souvenir from the Afro-American League of Tennessee to Hon. James M. Ashley of Ohio.
LC copy imperfect: p. xxiii-xxvi wanting.
Does not match appendix in LC's copy of 1894 ed. of main work. Presumably goes with 1893 ed. cited in NUC pre-56, NSA 0089421: qr06 7-30-92.
