Summary

Sidney Robertson Cowell notes on verso of copy of photograph in Music Division: "J.L. Hall, volunteer photographer for California Folk Music WPA project at work in backyard of Mr. Haroutunian in Fresno, 1938. The instrument is the folk form of the cembalom [cimbalom], played with hammers--much like the lumberjacks' hammer dulcimer played in the U.S. north woods--called by Armenians the kanoon [qanun]."
Forms part of a group of field materials documenting Bedros Haroutunian performing Armenian and Armeno-Turkish music on the kamanche and the qanun on April 22, 1939, collected by Sidney Robertson Cowell in Fresno, California.
