[Proof for an American flag campaign banner for John C. Breckinridge and Joseph Lane]

description

Summary

A proof specimen on paper for a campaign banner for Southern Democratic presidential candidate John C. Breckinridge. The banner consists of an American flag pattern printed in reverse. It was probably intended as a specimen, for marketing purposes, of a larger banner having the portrait of the candidate, similar to no. 1860-15. It is overprinted with the words, "An American Flag with Portrait of John C. Breckenridge, encircled by 33 Stars in a Blue Field, bearing the names, President, John C. Breckenridge; Vice President, Gen. Jos. Lane."

Copyrighted by H. C. Howard, Philadelphia; also deposited by H.C. Howard on July 12, 1860.
Published in: American political prints, 1766-1876 / Bernard F. Reilly. Boston : G.K. Hall, 1991, entry 1860-19.
