description

Summary

Significance: The original stone room of this house was evidently built by J. K. Smith on section fifty-nine of block three, Scurry County, Texas, in 1883. Two rooms of box and strip construction were subsequently added. Lon Smith then purchased the house, converted the stone fireplace into a double fireplace, and added the three easternmost rooms of box and strip construction between 1899 and 1913. Miss Myrtle and Miss Fay Harrell conducted a modified restoration of the house between 1961 and 1963. In 1972 it was moved to the Ranch Headquarters Complex at the Museum of Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
