The deposition of W. Kemper Clay.

description

Summary

In 1906 W. Kemper Clay, the son of Charles Clay and a Justice of the Peace on Bee Branch, took the land company and the heirs of Francis Granger to court on behalf of 800 people residing within a tract of 20,042 acres acquired by the Rowland Land Company from the Granger heirs. Among the two dozen parties named as plaintiffs are Kemper Clay's brothers, including Green Clay, now married to Betsy Ann, the daughter of Jacob and Celie Pettry, and living on Shumate's Branch. The case is settled out of court, and several years later the Rowland Land Company leases several thousand acres on Shumate's Branch to Green Clay. This is the first page of the deposition of W. Kemper Clay, in which he testified that his father, Charles L. Clay had purchased some of the acreage in question from the Grangers through their agent, Alfred Beckley.
