U.S. Naval Base, Pearl Harbor, Storehouse Extension, Gannet Street between Lexington Boulevard & parking lot, Pearl City, Honolulu County, HI
Summary
Significance: Facility 26A was built in 1935 as part of the expansion of facilities for the Fleet Air Base at Ford Island. During the 1930s the Navy frequently sent most of their fleet to Pearl Harbor to conduct war exercises, with planes, carriers and other ships. The need to provide supply for these exercises, as well as the Navy's conviction that a war with Japan was looming, led to the construction of new support buildings such as Facility 26A. This building is the second of four large aviation storehouses built on this side of Ford Island, and represents a distinctive design that is influenced by earlier storehouses and airplane hangars.
