description

Summary

2001 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Entry
Significance: In 1867 a two-story hotel was erected on the corner of Kansas and Railroad Avenues. L.E. Weaver settled in Waterville, KS in 1873 and began operation of an ice cream parlor in the hotel's building, with restaurant and baking facilities added soon afterward. In 1905 the old frame hotel was temporarily moved east into the street and remained in operation while William E. Weaver was building the new Weaver Hotel. Today, the Weaver Hotel still stands as it did in 1905 in Waterville, Kansas. The Waterville Preservation Society now owns the Weaver Hotel and is seeking grants for restoration. Projects covered under the grants include window restoration, exterior repointing and replacement of the balcony.
