"I'se in town, Honey." In the words of a well, known food advertisement this negro mother with her two children announced her arrival at an American Red Cross station in Roumanian town near the Bessarabian border. She is a Mohammedan negress, descendant of the sleeves imported from Africa by the old Roman conquerors. She heard of the American relief effort, and tramped miles to get some food and clothes for her children. The type and color of her garments shows the characteristics of the Oriental blood that has crept into her blood. Nowhere but in the Near East can be found such a conglomerate mixture of races

With the American Red Cross in Roumania. Canteens like the one shown in this photo, were established in a dozen or more of the most destitute villages of Roumania last winter by the American Red Cross, when the morale of the country was at its lowest point on account of the wide spread misery that had been caused by the German occupation, when under orders of Field Marshall Vin Mackensen, the German troops requisitioned all the grain that could be found in the country and also took away tons of household supplies. When the Germans left and when the Bulgars and Turks-who were even more avaricious than the Germans in the matter of looting, took their departure, Roumania was left helpless. Without the American aid that was freely given, the Country could not have found strength or inclination to start on the work of reconstruction

This well has been in operation in Roumania since the time of Christ. It is the method of drawing water used in Biblical times. The rope and pulley are of comparatively modern times. But the old method was to raise and lower the bucket by balancing stones on the end of the high pole. The American Red Cross found that many of these old wells were a source of epidemics to the people of the districts

Most of the recipients of American generosity were mothers and children. Rather than have their children appear before the Queen in their rags, many mothers dressed them in just a smile. Gourgeous holiday costumes of Roumanian Peasantry. Beautiful hand embroidered over dresses, and filmy hand made lace scarfs, were common enough in Roumania among the peasant women, before the German Bulgar Turk occupation during the war. Now these gorgeous costumes are only seen in remote villages where the Hun or Turk looters either stopped for a short time only, or did not visit at all. Garments of this character are heirlooms handed down from mother to daughter. And it is difficult to calculate their value. Today there is a serious shortage of woolen and cotton garments in Roumania, and even their ordinary peasant costumes, in which plain white wool or cotton are largely used are really luxuries. It was to relieve this situation that the American Red Cross brought tons of substantial wearing apparel bath robes and hospital garments mainly from the big stores that had been originally sent to the warehouses of France for use of the American Army and distributed this stuff to the sufferers in Roumania. Women of the country were employed to make the garments into warm dresses for needy Roumanian boys and girls and for the babies
