description

Summary

Significance: Constructed from 1854 through 1857 according to the designs of owner and builder, William Varner, Grey Columns served as the focal point of one of the Varner plantations. In the early 1920's the family made extensive alterations to the house following a fire. Alterations included a new kitchen wing to the rear and bathrooms adjacent to the second-floor front stair hall and to the south bedroom. In 1934 the house was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey. In the 1950's additional alterations were made, including the installation of bathrooms in the closets of the west parlor and the west bedroom. In 1974 the National Park Service acquired Grey Columns as a part of the Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site.
