Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Boiler Shop, Waterfront Avenue, west side between A Street & Third Street, Vallejo, Solano County, CA
Summary
Significance: Building 89/91 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Building 89/91 is significant historically and architecturally. Historically, it is important as one of the oldest brick shops at Mare Island; construction began in 1858, although it was not completed until 1871. The building also illustrates the adaptability of the old brick shops buildings. It was built as a machine shop for working on wooden sailing ships, but was incorporated into the Steam Engineering Complex when steam power was adopted for most Navy ship designs at the turn of the century. Architecturally, Building 89/91 is a good representative example of the high-quality, brick masonry design at Mare Island during the 19th century, including the dominant neoclassical architectural program that guided most of that construction.
