Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Quarters 17-18 Garage & Servants Quarters, Cedar Avenue, east side between Ninth & Tenth Streets, Vallejo, Solano County, CA
Summary
Significance: Building 17-18A is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Building 17-18a is significant as a member of a group of ten duplex garage-servants' quarters units, which correspond to the ten officers' duplexes that were built along Cedar Avenue in 1942. These garage-servants' quarters units share with the duplexes the distinction of having been built to permanent standards during World War II, a rarity among military housing units from that period. The functional design of these buildings is interesting in that it illustrates as a transitional aspect of the lifestyles of Navy officers during the early years of World War II. Most quarters for high-ranking officers built before 1941 included servants' quarters; very few built after 1945 made such provisions. The garage-servants' quarters also exemplify the unusual California Modern design qualities of the accompanying officers' duplexes.
