Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Wilderman Hall, Johnson Lane, north side adjacent to (south of) Hospital Complex, Vallejo, Solano County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: Building 926 is a contributing element of the Mare Island Historic District. Building 926 is significant architecturally as the most refined and successful Mission Revival building at Mare Island. During the 1920s and 1930s, the Navy adopted the Mission Revival as the style of choice for new construction at Mare Island, despite the fact that the base had been built around an integrated program of neoclassical and Colonial Revival styling. Building 926 is arguably the best expression of the Mission Revival at the island.
