Neuhaus Complex, L. E. Neuhaus Homestead, Highway 532, Hackberry, Lavaca County, TX
Summary
1992 Charles E. Peterson Prize, Second Place
Significance: The homestead is a notable example of German fachwerk construction of hand-hewn oak timbers and site-fired bricks. Built between 1850-1852, the 2 story structure served as home for an industrious, entrepreneurial German immigrant, Ludwig Eduard Neuhaus, and his family, as well as housing his fledgling mercantile establishment. As his business grew, so did the building. Around the end of the Civil War, a 2 story stone addition was built onto the east end of the house to enlarge the store area...
