Theodore Irwin House, 240 North Grand Avenue, Pasadena, Los Angeles County, CA

description

Summary

Chimneys were constructed of clinker brick with cobblestone inserts.
Significance: Built in 1906, the Irwin House reveals many of the design elements which would later be refined by the talented team of Charles and Henry Greene. With the two-story court in the center, and the rooms grouped around it, the house has one of the most unusual plans of any that the Greene brothers designed. In addition, the house represents an experimental period in their detailing, and displays their ingenuity in transforming what was originally a single-story structure for a former client into a much larger two-story house. / The Theodore Irwin House, built in 1906, reveals elements of design which were to be refined in the later works of Charles and Henry Greene. Many of the details are seen in an experimental stage. The house, which envelops an earlier 1-story residence designed by the Greene brothers for Katherine M. Duncan, shows their most erratic plan. Its numerous rooms are arranged around a two-story interior open court and many of the second floor rooms open directly onto its balcony.
