Union Canal Locks, Bernville, Berks County, PA
Summary
Significance: The ruins of these locks document 19th-century canal technology, and illustrate the importance of water transportation in the first half of the century. Although the Union Canal failed to become the major trade route its sponsors had hoped for, the canal was important for transportation and communication in the local farming community.
