description

Summary

Print showing Fort Harrison from across the Wabash River, with four Natives in a canoe on the river.

Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1848 by Modesitt & Hager in the Clerk's office of the District Court of the State of Indiana.
Inscribed in pencil on lower left: [On the Wabash, above Terre Haute, see Melishs "Map of Indiana", 1820]
James A. Modesitt was the son of Dr. Charles B. Modesitt who lived in Fort Harrison. Luther G. Hager, an artist, moved into the area in 1836. The print was produced during the 1848 presidential campaign of Zachary Taylor, who had been a captain at the fort. Modesitt and Hager created a 15 x 40 painting of the fort and sold lithographs to support their effort.
