description

Summary

See HABS No. KS-49 for list of structures that are contributing to the historic district
Significance: Sold to Burney circa 1975 and alterations never completed. Vacant. Striking reflection of local house evolution. Two room building moved onto townsite for residence. After east addition, building finished to suggest uniformity; white stucco and paint and green shingles over all. Large concrete slab southeast corner typical of large pave outdoor spaces that may have been work spaces off kitchens and/or sitting areas. Modern alterations would have included indoor plumbing, water, electricity, and telephone which previous occupant lived without. Scruggs was a colorful local character. Hard luck caused him to live in numerous places all over Nicodemus Township. This is the house he made when he finally moved to town. It represents local building materials and practices and the small scale typical of many period residences.
