Officers of the 25th United States Colored Troops

description

Summary

Photographs show primarily single portraits of officers serving in the 25th Regiment, United States Colored Troops. Includes about forty-five identified sitters, ranking as Captains or Lieutenants, two troop doctors and a Chaplain. The album also has portraits of ten women, eight are pictured alone, two appear with men, perhaps their husbands (only half of the ten women are identified). Several additional sitters include a young man or boy identified only as Mr. King; a tintype portrait of a man in a suit, labeled George W. Elberson or Ellerson (?); and, two soldiers from the 6th and the 24th regiments of the United States Colored Troops.

The single best source for Civil War photographs is the U.S. Library of Congress, which holds the core collections of original Civil War documentary ... The majority of the ambrotypes and tintypes are portraits by unidentified photographers of Civil War soldiers, primarily Union soldiers.
