Presidio of San Francisco, Tennis Court, Letterman Hospital Complex, 1147 Sternberg Road, San Francisco, San Francisco County, CA

description

Summary

Significance: The tennis court is a contributing recreational structure to the Presidio of San Francisco National Historic Landmark. The Presidio has a long and unique tradition of recreational activities among military installations. Of importance to this tradition are the existence of an early golf course, a public playground, and a long and consistent history of construction of tennis courts dating back to 1885. The use of the Presidio for recreation by both military personnel and the public is one of the few themes to connect the historical Presidio to the Presidio National Park. The tennis court may have also been an integral part of the rehabilitation and recuperation of the patients of Letterman General Hospital.
