Typical Transylvanian peasant children. The flowers they hold were gathered to present to the A.R.C. workers as they passed in their car to distribute medical relief to the people in the remote district. Gourgeous holiday costumes of Roumanian Peasantry. Beautiful hand embroidered over dresses, and filmy hand made lace scarfs, were common enough in Roumania among the peasant women, before the German Bulgar Turk occupation during the war. Now these gorgeous costumes are only seen in remote villages where the Hun or Turk looters either stopped for a short time only, or did not visit at all. Garments of this character are heirlooms handed down from mother to daughter. And it is difficult to calculate their value. Today there is a serious shortage of woolen and cotton garments in Roumania, and even their ordinary peasant costumes, in which plain white wool or cotton are largely used are really luxuries. It was to relieve this situation that the American Red Cross brought tons of substantial wearing apparel bath robes and hospital garments mainly from the big stores that had been originally sent to the warehouses of France for use of the American Army and distributed this stuff to the sufferers in Roumania. Women of the country were employed to make the garments into warm dresses for needy Roumanian boys and girls and for the babies

The latest in royal reviews. Ever since the armistice, the fashion in "reviews" has changed considerably in the Balkans. Instead of long parades of gold braided officials and smart uniformed soldiery, as in the "Old Days", there are inspections of bread and soup lines, and files of ragged, destitute peasants. This picture illustrates the change in the old order. Queen Marie of Roumania is shown handing out American Clothing, and food to ragged peasants at a Red Cross relief station near Domnesti. As an American Red Cross worker Queen Marie had an opportunity to get first hand information from thousands of Roumanians as their conditions and needs

Here's a Chance for Comstock's Followers. There are many thousand people in Roumania who could welcome a crusade against the wearing of scanty clothing. Because its not through any fault of theirs that they go around in extreme decollete. Their answer to an order to put on more clothes would be "Certainly, give us some." This picture shows the condition of many of the children. It was taken at one of the American Red Cross Relief stations while Queen Marie was assisting at a clothing distribution. The youngster at the left seems a bit embarrassed at appearing before Her Majesty in such an advanced stage of negligee. The other chap has just received a complete outfit and he is thanking the queen

A Relic of Feudal times. This is an old Hungarian baron's castle in the Transylvania. From here a foreign lord once ruled over the Destinies of the entire district. Today the castle is serving as a storehouse for American supplies, which the Red Cross is distributing to the descendants of those who could approach the castle on their knees

Presently the window opens and Miss Ober, in long white hospital apron and rubber gloves, begins her three hours' work with the children. The rubber gloves are a very necessary precaution, for there is typhus and many other contagious and infectious diseases about. The ailments are of great variety, but much of the trouble is skin diseases and diseases due to malnutrition and uncleanliness

Living the life of a soldier. Like real little soldiers these two Roumanian orphan boys accepted their first weeks of trench life. In the dank darkness of their old dugout homes along the battlefront they have inherited the hardships their father endured. They themselves are being slain and deformed by their greatest enemy: darkness. Over their heads the weeds grow in sunlight. But in the blackness of their trench home their fragile bodies wither and crumple like thirsty flowers. The smoke that had no outled from their cavern fireside temporarily blinded them and finally affected their eyesight. When rescued by Junior Red Cross relief workers, a heavy film coated their eyes. Trachoma and other eye diseases so prevalent in eastern Europe today are easily traced to crowding children into living quarters as these
