description

Summary

Print shows Britannia and America, several British ministers, and King George III, they appear as couples shaking hands, except for the central figure of three. Standing on the left is Britannia with the British lion at her feet, largely obscured by her shield, she is shaking hands with a Native woman, representing America, wearing a feathered headdress and skirt, and holding a staff topped with a liberty cap; to the right, in the background, stands the Duke of Richmond shaking hands with the Rev. Henry Bate Dudley; next Sir Hugh Palliser and Admiral Keppel are shaking hands; and on the far right, John Wilkes, with left hand raised, is shaking hands with George III. The central figure in the foreground is comprised of Lord Shelburne shaking hands with Charles James Fox and Lord Denbigh, as a foxhound, with his paws on Fox's left shoulder. Each person addresses the other as part of a verse which appears as balloons, possibly beginning on the left with Britannia, "Come, come, shake hands, and lets be friends," to which America replies, "With all my heart, I've gained my ends," or possibly with Fox, as the central figure, who says, "I now will play the foxes part, and gain a secret from each heart."
