description

Summary

Significance: Bridgeport's history and small remnants of its built environment are representative of late-nineteenth century speculative "boom towns" that spread through the South and other areas of the United States. The downtown's combination of decaying late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century buildings are typical of southern towns that grew up along the river ports and rail hubs and then suffered the industrial and economic restructuring of the late 20th century.
