description

Summary

Significance: The Yacht Club has had a historically significant role in the development of the community of Avila Beach and during the United States involvement in World War II. Members of the San Luis Yacht Club constructed the Yacht Club between 1939 and 1941 to house their organization and host club events. Shortly after the first Yacht Club party in the new clubhouse, the bombing of Pearl Harbor occurred and immediately after this event the United States Armed Forces took control of the Port of San Luis piers and wharves and rented the Yacht Club for the duration of the war. The Yacht Club was part of the United States military operations on the west coast, and was used to house troops and stage training operations. Since the end of World War II the San Luis Yacht Club and the community have actively used the Yacht Club building for club and community events.
