Summary

Print shows a reenactment of Abraham Lincoln signing the Emancipation Proclamation on July 22, 1862, painted by Francis B. Carpenter at the White House in 1864. Depicted, from left to right are: Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War, Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury, President Lincoln, Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy, Caleb B. Smith, Secretary of the Interior, William H. Seward, Secretary of State, Montgomery Blair, Postmaster General, and Edward Bates, Attorney General. Simon Cameron and Andrew Jackson are featured as paintings.

Caption continues: From the original picture painted at the White House in 1864.
Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1866 by F.B. Carpenter in the clerks Office of the District Court of the United States for the Southern District of New York.
Library has two impressions, one with surnames noted above and below image in pencil and one with names of individuals printed below image, also with note: Premium Engraving From "The Independent."
The original painting is in the collection of the United States Senate.
