The original image was taken during Lincoln's journey to Washington for the inauguration and is one of three images in the first set of photos of the president elect. In this view taken shortly after sunrise, "Lincoln is closer to the center of the flag, standing bare-headed above the third star from the left. ... Tad leans on the rail with chin in hand, gazing at the spectators." (Source: Ostendorf, p. 73-4) Meserve printed only the center of the image for his book, showing the area between two trees.
